Microsoft released an out-of-band update to fix the March 2026 non-security preview update, which was pulled over the weekend due to installation issues.
The optional cumulative update (KB5079391) was released on Thursday for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 systems, with 29 changes, including Smart App Control and Display improvements.
However, right after it started rolling out, users started reporting errors saying that "Some update files are missing or have problems. We'll try to download the update again later. Error code: (0x80073712)."
Days after the first reports surfaced, Microsoft stopped the optional update rollout and confirmed the installation issues and 0x80073712 errors.
On Tuesday, Microsoft issued the Windows 11 KB5086672 emergency update for affected Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2 systems, replacing the broken KB5079391 preview update.
"An out-of-band (OOB) update was released today, March 31, 2026, to address this installation issue. This cumulative OOB update for Windows 11, versions 25H2 and 24H2 (KB5086672) supersedes all previous updates and includes all protections and improvements from the March 2026 Windows security and non-security preview updates, as well as this installation fix," Microsoft said.
