Microsoft says it has "partially" resolved a known issue that caused problems when trying to play DRM-protected video in Blu-ray/DVD/Digital TV applications.

This bug affects Windows 11 24H2 systems, and it triggers freezes, black screens, and other issues after installing the August preview update or later.

"Some Digital TV and BluRay/DVD applications might experience problems playing protected content after installing the August 29, 2025 Windows non-security preview update (KB5064081), or later updates," Microsoft said on Friday when it acknowledged the issue.

"Applications using Enhanced Video Renderer with HDCP enforcement or Digital Rights Management (DRM) for digital audio might experience copyright protection errors, frequent playback interruptions, freezing or black screens."

The company has since released KB5065789, the September 2025 Windows preview update, which "partially resolved" the issue for some Windows 11 users experiencing problems when playing Digital Rights Management (DRM)- protected video content.

"We recommend you install the latest update for your device as it contains important improvements and issue resolutions, including this one," Redmond added in a Monday update to the Windows release health dashboard. "However, some applications using DRM for digital audio might continue to experience problems."

Microsoft has fixed other issues caused by the August 2025 Windows updates since the start of the month, including one that was causing app installation problems for non-admin Windows users due to unexpected User Account Control (UAC) prompts.

Earlier, it addressed severe lag and stuttering issues with NDI streaming software that impacted Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems.

After releasing the August cumulative updates, Microsoft also addressed a known issue that was causing security updates delivered via Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) to fail with 0x80240069 errors.

One week later, Redmond released emergency Windows updates to fix a bug that had broken Windows reset and recovery operations on Windows 10 and Windows 10 Enterprise devices.
