A wave of new schemes is targeting both customers and delivery drivers, a.k.a. Dashers. From fake payment claims to customer support impersonators, here are the DoorDash scams you should know to help prevent dinner from turning into a disaster. 

1. Customer support phishing scams

In this phishing scam, fraudsters impersonate DoorDash customer support to trick both customers and Dashers into revealing personal and financial information. They often claim there's an issue with your order or account, and ask for sensitive details like passwords or verification codes to access it and steal data or money.

2. “Cash on delivery” order scam

If you’re a Dasher, watch out for Cash-on-Delivery (COD) scams that could leave you footing the bill. With COD orders, customers pay in cash when the food arrives. But scammers are exploiting this option to trick drivers into covering the cost themselves.

One Redditor shared their experience after picking up a COD pizza order. On the way to the drop-off, the customer called and claimed they had already paid by credit card and wouldn’t need to pay with cash. Luckily, the Dasher contacted DoorDash support, who confirmed it was a scam attempt. 

3. Customer-driven fraud to get free food

Some users falsely claim their food never arrived to try and game the system. One TikToker even bragged about getting a $50 credit from DoorDash after lying about a completed delivery and even encouraged others to do the same. 

But while it’s often spouted online as a harmless hack, this kind of fraud can hurt more than just the company. Dashers may get penalized or even lose their accounts over false claims like these.

How to dodge DoorDash scams

Whether you’re delivering food or ordering it, scammers are finding new ways to take advantage of the platform. Staying alert and following a few key safety tips can help protect your account, your money, and your peace of mind.

For all users: 

• Verify claims: Reach out to the official DoorDash support in the app or by phone to confirm any unsolicited or unusual requests from customers, Dashers, or support agents. 

• Keep communication in the app: DoorDash masks phone numbers to protect privacy, so avoid switching to texts or calls outside the platform. 

• Never share verification codes: DoorDash will never ask for your two-factor authentication code via call or text. 

• Watch out for sketchy links: If someone sends you a link to an unfamiliar website, double-check the URL before clicking. 
• Report fraudulent activity: If something feels off, contact DoorDash Customer Support by phone or live chat.  

For Dashers: 

• Don't accept unusual orders: Requests for odd things like just a few sauce packets could be part of a scam. 

• Avoid COD orders: COD orders can be risky, especially if a customer refuses to pay.
