GitLab Arbitrary File Write Vulnerability (CVE-2024-0402) Alert

Overview

Recently, NSFOCUS CERT detected that GitLab officially released a security announcement and fixed an arbitrary file write vulnerability (CVE-2024-0402) in GitLab Community Edition (CE) and Enterprise Edition (EE). Due to path traversal issues, authenticated attackers can copy files to any location on the GitLab server when creating workspaces.

The CVSS score is 9.9, affected users should take protective measures as soon as possible.

Affected version

  • 16.0 <= GitLab CE/EE < 16.5.8
  • 16.6 <= GitLab CE/EE < 16.6.6
  • 16.7 <= GitLab CE/EE < 16.7.4
  • 16.8 <= GitLab CE/EE < 16.8.1

Unaffected version

  • GitLab CE/EE >= 16.6.6
  • GitLab CE/EE >= 16.7.4
  • GitLab CE/EE >= 16.8.1

Note: The repair procedure of CVE-2024-0402 has been migrated back to version 16.5.8.

Detection

Relevant users can determine whether the current application has risks through version detection.

Use the following command to view the currently used GitLab version:

cat /opt/gitlab/embedded/service/gitlab-rails/VERSION

If the current version is affected, there may be a security risk.

Mitigation

Official upgrade

At present, this vulnerability has been officially fixed in the latest version. Please upgrade the version for protection as soon as possible. The official download link: https://about.gitlab.com/update/

Other protective measures

If relevant users cannot perform the upgrade operation temporarily, they can use a whitelist to restrict access to the Web port.
