The functionality SAP Analytics Cloud Custom Widget is not new but has been recently extended with the feature to host the widget right inside SAP Analytics Cloud and to use a data model as data source without a significant effort.

The scenario: A developer gets the request to embed a chart in an SAP Analytics Cloud Story whose template is part of an external chart library.  

Step-by step procedure:  

• Identification of a suitable chart library (opensource) 
• Creation of a JSON file including configurations (name of the widget, location of the external chart library, events etc.) 
• Uploading of the JSON file right into SAP Analytics Cloud 
• Creation of a Javascript file (web component) including functionality (what happens before and after the rendering etc.)     
• Uploading of the Javascript file right into the SAP Analytics Cloud 
• Accessing the chart library through the Javascript file to upload it during the run-time of the widget
