Introduction
Imagine a scenario where, as part of shift handover activities, Supervisors receive a comprehensive shift report on their mobile phones, covering in detail the last shift highlights, production details, stock levels, defect and downtime information, OEE KPIs and much more?
Now imagine that this report is delivered in a dynamic, easy to consume and visually engaging video format?
This is not just a futuristic vision. It’s a real possibility made possible by the synergy of SAP Digital Manufacturing and the transformative power of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI).
In this blog post, I will guide you through a description of this use case, provide an example, discuss its benefits, and offer a starting point for its implementation.
What is Generative AI?
Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is a subset of artificial intelligence (AI) that focuses on generating new content, such as images, text, or even videos, rather than simply recognizing or processing existing data. Unlike traditional AI systems that follow predefined rules, GenAI leverages advanced algorithms to learn patterns and generate novel, human-like outputs.
Use Case Description: Shift Report using AI
By using shift end time as a trigger, relevant data from the last shift can be extracted from SAP Digital Manufacturing via public APIs (see available public APIs at Business Accelerator Hub). This includes last shift highlights such as production details, stock levels, defect and downtime information, OEE KPIs, and more.
This data can serve as raw material and be used by a Generative AI to create a comprehensive and detailed shift report story, including a tailored talk track and insightful remarks about the last shift.
Subsequently, this story can be used by another Generative AI to generate a dynamic, easily consumable, and visually engaging shift report in video format.
The shift report in video format can then be delivered to supervisors and plant managers’ mobile phones through various platforms such as email, MS Teams, etc.

Benefits
Implementing this Use Case offers a lot of potential benefitis, to name a few:
Conclusion
In conclusion, the idea of using SAP Digital Manufacturing and GenAI together to create dynamic shift reports can be a paradigm shift in manufacturing reporting. It has the potential not only to streamline shift handover processes by transforming raw data into actionable insights presented in a visually engaging way.
